Index Scoring Methodology & Weighting
A high annual snowfall number alone does not determine if you need a snow blower. Ten 1.5-inch snow dustings can be swept with a broom, but two 8-inch wet snowstorms with a frozen street plow ridge will incapacitate a suburban home. We score on 5 weighted factors:
30-year NOAA cooperative observer data. 24" in Northeast MO scores 30/30; 10" in the Bootheel scores 12/30.
Probability of single storms delivering 6+ inches. This measures the likelihood of events that exceed manual shovel limits.
Municipal plow patterns and likelihood of frozen slush windrows at the end of the driveway.
Frequency of sleet and freezing rain crusting that demands steel serrated augers over rubber paddles.
Prevalence of long rural lanes, steep Ozark grades, or gravel surfaces vs small flat suburban lots.
