How to Replace Snow Blower Shear Pins

Shear pins are the intentional mechanical fuses of your snow blower. When you hit a chunk of ice or rock, they snap to save your expensive engine and gearbox. Here is how to replace them in 3 minutes.

💡 Golden Rule: Keep 4 spare shear pins and a pair of 7/16" or 10mm wrenches taped directly to the handle of your snow blower. When one breaks at 6:30 AM in a blizzard, you won't have to search your workbench in the dark.

Step 1: Shut Off the Engine & Remove the Safety Key

Disconnect the spark plug boot for 100% safety before reaching near the auger.

Step 2: Punch Out the Broken Pin Shaft

Rotate the spiral auger by hand until the shear hole in the blade lines up with the matching hole in the central axle shaft. Use a nail punch or screwdriver and a light tap with a hammer to knock out the remaining sheared bolt fragment.

Step 3: Insert the New OEM Shear Bolt

Slide the new OEM shear bolt through the aligned hole. Thread on the nylon locknut.

Step 4: Snug the Nut (Do NOT Over-Tighten!)

Tighten the nut until it contacts the washer or auger collar, but do not crank it down with extreme leverage. Over-tightening can pre-stress the engineered shear notch, causing it to snap under normal snow loading.

Standard hardware bolts (Grade 2, 5, or 8) are made of hardened solid steel without engineered shear grooves. A factory shear pin is deliberately engineered with microscopic notches to snap at a precise torque load (around 60–80 ft-lbs). If an immovable rock jams your auger and you have a hardened bolt installed, the bolt will refuse to break—instead transferring all rotational energy into the center cast-iron gearbox, shattering the gears and costing $350–$500 in repairs.
